TODAY is Derrick’s birthday, and let’s just say: it’s a big one.
We’ve been staring down the pipe at this birthday all year and I won’t lie, all week, we’ve been a little tense.
I remember “30” being a big birthday – it came with a lot of trepidation, a lot of transition, and a lot of dreams and goals. (By 30 we wanted to start our family and have your college debt paid off – we succeeded with one but missed the second goal by about a year.) We wanted to start traveling more and wanted to really grow your YouTube channel. We were growing through a period of change, and in some ways, it feels like it was forever ago, and yet also just yesterday.
And well, somehow we blinked and a decade has passed. We’re still dreaming big and setting fun goals (none of which revolve around babies or debt though!) I feel like life has settled into this beautiful rhythm over the last 10 years and I honestly love it.
I love doing life with you. And I honestly don’t care what the age on your driver’s license says (it’s just a number anyway). You’re still the thrill-seeking, level-headed, logical-reasoning, spontaneous-loving man I met 18 years ago.
And, while it feels like we’ve been holding our breath all week as time ticks down to today – guess what? Today has arrived. There was no stopping time – no freezing life at 39 years young forever. But ya know, it’s okay. Stepping into a new decade with you is exciting because I truly feel like: the best is yet to come.
