- It’s been a BIRTHDAY WEEK in the Abbey house – Braelynn turned SEVEN years old this week!! (I’m still struggling to wrap my brain around that one – for some reason, 7 feels SO much older than 6!!) We’ve been celebrating all week – kicking things off with her Auntie Ruby sleeping over Monday into Tuesday (so she’d be here to wake up on Braelynn’s birthday). We had special crepes for breakfast (as requested by the birthday girl), bacon sandwiches for lunch, and then went to dinner at “The Cookie Place” (aka Eat’n’Park). Braelynn claimed it to be the “best day ever” because she got to eat all of her favorite foods.
We continued the (food) celebration with chocolate chip cookies from Starbucks (after her good check-up with Dr. H.), chicken legs for dinner one night (which Braelynn proclaimed as her “favorite” food), and ice cream for her birthday dessert!
The grand finale of the week was a big party here at our house last night! We packed everyone in & had a wonderful time celebrating our girl.
While we were at Eat’n’Park for Braelynn’s birthday dinner, she slid over next to me, snuggled up to my side & said: “I got the best present ever the day I was born, Mama.” Slightly confused, I asked her what that was, and she responded: “My true love – you.” (Cue all the tears.)
We did break a plate at Eat’n’Park though, so that was delightfully embarrassing.
Moving on. - Today is the annual “Braelynn’s birthday Abby’s Saturday” photo! If you’d like a trip down memory lane, you can go back & see the past photos I’ve taken here: #335, #283, #236, #184. (But seriously: Leander’s hair in this photo makes my laugh! Everything is so staticky in our house in the winter!)
- Since both Braelynn & Leander have winter birthdays – I take their birthday portraits in their bedrooms along their “focal point” walls (Leander has a bright blue wall & Braelynn has a grey wall with pink polka dots). It’s a lot of work to rearrange their entire bedrooms to make this work, but I do it every year (and it’s only for one day), so it’s totally worth it! See Braelynn’s 7 year birthday portraits here!
- I know I said I was done giving potty training updates, but I feel like we’ve regressed this week.
Well, I can’t figure out if it’s a regression or if he’s purposefully having accidents just to get attention.
Because, at the beginning of this week – he was doing AMAZING! He was taking himself to the potty – all by himself! I was celebrating: we’ve done it! We’ve arrived! This is it!
And then Thursday, when I started hard-core prepping for Braelynn’s birthday party & house-guests, he stepped off the cliff. He had multiple accidents on Thursday & Friday – culminating with him peeing on 3 separate couch cushions Friday morning, while I was upstairs vacuuming.
So, now that the party is over, we’ll see if things go back to normal today?

[…] Braelynn celebrated her 8th birthday this week!! Since her birthday fell on a Wednesday this year, we opted to have her birthday party the weekend before (that way, Papa and Nana could be with us). I’ll be posting more about her party this coming week!I still wanted to make her birthday as special as possible though, so I told her I’d make her whatever she wanted for breakfast. We then made plans to pick up lunch from one of her favorite restaurants (“The Cookie Place” aka Eat’n’Park) and go visit my Grandma (Braelynn’s Great Grandma). And then we had church that night. So for breakfast, Braelynn told me she wanted crepes. I wasn’t surprised – she’s requested crepes for her birthday breakfast every year for the past 2-3 years! I started putting the batter together and then realized that I didn’t have any strawberries – no worries, I had frozen blueberries, we’d just use those. Then, I realized I didn’t have any whipped cream – no worries, I had heavy cream, I’d just make some! So, I started pulling all of that out and as I was pouring the heavy cream into the measuring cup, I realized it was spoiled. Yuck. Needless to say, Braelynn’s “birthday crepes” didn’t turn out nearly as planned! So, I promised her we would re-do them on Saturday – with the correct topping ingredients this time! (And spoiler alert – we made them this morning, with fresh cream and fresh strawberries – they were delicious!)Otherwise, we have celebrated our BIG girl all week! We went to Red Lobster on Monday night for endless shrimp, we visited Braelynn’s Great Grandma, Great Meme and Great Grandpa (all of my grandparents), and we’ve been reminded every single day that she’s now “eight years old”.So, today is the annual “Braelynn’s birthday Abby’s Saturday” photo!
