The longer we’re married, the more I love our anniversary.
It’s this mile-marker moment in time where we are invited to stop, look back at where we started, contemplate all we’ve been through, and then celebrate the here and now. (Yep, that probably sounds like a Hallmark card, but that’s honestly where I am in this moment in time.)
Today is Derrick and I’s 16th wedding anniversary – which I’m not sure is entirely possible, since we’re only 25 years old? But regardless, the math says we got married 16 years ago today.
I could write a bunch of gobbledygook about how wonderful marriage is and how happy we are to be married – and while that’s the case a lot of the time, there are definitely moments where we kind of don’t like each other (like when he’s slurping a drink or I leave dishes in the sink for him to walk in the door to). Let’s be honest: we’re human and we aren’t perfect and we don’t have a perfect marriage.
But here’s the thing: no matter what, he’s still my person (and I’m still his person). He is the one I want to come back to, even after fighting, disagreeing, or being frustrated with. Because he’s my best friend and I know, we not only have each other’s backs, but we want what’s best for each other.
We’ve walked through some tough stuff (especially this past year, with my health going haywire and us trying so hard to figure out why), but I trust him more now than I ever have in the past.
I know I’ve called Derrick my rock before, but he still is. And that’s honestly the best, most descriptive word I can use to accurately describe him. And he’s really good at it. And I love him for it.
In fact, I love him more today, than I did last year, than I did 16 years ago.
Happy anniversary, Derk – cheers to the next 16+ years!
