This past Saturday, Lily and Jonah got married in the yard where Lily grew up.
Not a venue built to look like someone’s backyard. Not a rented property dressed up for the day. The actual house. The actual yard. Even the bedroom where Lily got ready day in and day out, and now, for her wedding day.
There are venues that are beautiful because of the architecture. And then there are places that are beautiful because of everything that’s already happened there. For Lily and Jonah’s wedding in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, it was very much the second kind.
But like any good love story, this one didn’t start with Lily and Jonah.
It started with their parents.
Years before Lily and Jonah were born, their moms and dads were close friends. Then Jonah’s family moved to central PA, and over the years, the two families drifted apart the way families do.
Fast forward to the pandemic (which in this specific case, was a good thing):
A Facebook Live performance brought some familiar faces back into Lily’s mom’s world. When she found out Jonah’s parents’ band was playing at a local church in southwestern PA, she knew she had to be there. That night turned into a reunion decades in the making – old friends catching up, memories getting retold, and somewhere in the middle of it, their moms jokingly floated the idea that maybe their kids should meet.
Jonah messaged Lily on Instagram not long after.
She replied. Things got a little flirtatious. Lily decided it wasn’t for her and let it fade.
But for some reason, she just could not get Jonah out of the back of her mind.
Over the next few months, Lily’s mom kept nudging her to give him another shot – she knew Jonah and his family well, and had a feeling he was worth it. So Lily reached back out. The two of them talked nonstop for about a week before finally meeting in person at Twin Lakes.
They walked. They talked. And as Lily puts it, “the rest is history.”
So when it came time to plan the wedding, choosing a place already full of meaning just made sense.
Lily’s parents turned their own property into the wedding venue. Lily got ready in her bedroom. Jonah and Lily said their vows under the towering trees in the yard, surrounded by the people who love them most. Portraits happened all over the property they know like the back of their hands. Cocktail hour spilled from the patio into the family’s great room.
And then there was the garage.
Lily’s step-dad transformed it into an honest-to-goodness reception space – soft draping, string lights, candlelight, all the small details that made the room feel warm instead of, well, like a garage. It’s genuinely hard to believe that’s what it started as!
My favorite parts of any wedding day are the ones that happen in between the big moments. The familiar rooms where Lily and Jonah got ready. The quiet moments with family when no one’s performing for a camera. The reactions happening in the background. The small stuff that made this day theirs and nobody else’s.
Because what made Saturday unforgettable wasn’t just how beautiful it all looked.
It was the meaning underneath it. A friendship between two families that started decades ago eventually brought their kids together. A childhood home became the place where a marriage began. And for one day, every corner of that property got a new layer of memories to hold onto.
