I have always loved looking at the stars. So has my Dad – it’s one of those things we’ve always enjoyed doing together. On clear nights on the shore of the lake, the stars at Deep Creek Lake, MD are absolutely incredible! One such night, a few years ago, my Dad and I had walked down to the lake shore to look at the stars. They were amazing to say the least. I remember them feeling so clear and so close that it seemed you could just reach up and grab a few.
After spending some time soaking it all in, we started to walk back up to the house. A car came by while we were midway up the hill and we heard a lough but distinct POP. My Dad started laughing, “I bet I know what that was!” “What what was?” “That pop! Didn’t you hear it?” “Yeah, what was it?” “I bet that car just ran over a frog & it exploded!” “Ewww, really?” Next thing we knew, we were up on the road and my Dad was looking for the frog. Sure enough, a few feet down from our driveway, there he was: a popped frog.
We still laugh to this day about that! Especially whenever we’re outside late at night & hear anything that slightly resembles a pop.
A few weeks ago, when we spent a week vacationing at the lake, I knew I wanted to get some photos of the stars. I have never photographed the night sky before & I was so pumped to do it! It just always seemed that every time I have all the right gear with me at the lake, the skies are cloudy. Or every time the skies were clear, I didn’t have the right camera equipment! Well, this time, I was prepared and I lucked out! We actually had 2 amazing clear nights that I was able to take photos on!
The first clear evening was Monday night. I put Braelynn to bed and walked down to the lake shore. I knew that it was still a bit light out and I would need to wait for it to get dark, but I wanted to get down to the lake with a little light to get my tripod & camera set up. I knew that the sun had officially gone down & the light would fade fast! So, I was down there about 8:30pm that night & these are some of the photos I took!
I was super excited with what I got! I was down at the lake for almost an hour (turns out, these photos take a lot of time to take!)
Then, I was blessed with another clear night! So, the following Sunday evening, Dad & I walked down to the water again. This time it was later: about 10:30pm. So, the sky definitely looked different! There was more light “pollution” though, since it was Labor Day weekend & there were a lot more lights on around the lake. That’s alright though – I still got some amazing photos that I just love!
