- It’s been VBS week at our church (and if you’ve ever been part of a church’s VBS program – you know).
VBS week is notorious for being long, exhausting, and tons of work.
It’s also so much fun (for the kids and the adults!)
This year, our church did a program called Keepers of the Kingdom by Answers in Genesis. It was a week focused on putting on the full armor of God – and it was next level.
Last summer was the first year our church had ever done VBS. It was fantastic, but nothing compared to this year. This year – they took things over the top! The entire church was decorated to the max, there were more kids signed up, more volunteers, and a full-blown nightly skit (with actors in costume up on stage).
It was amazing.
Well, it was amazing Monday night and Tuesday night. And then Wednesday hit and things started going down-hill.
Poor Braelynn got sick – some sort of nasty 48-hour stomach virus. At first I thought it was the usual 12-hour thing she gets when she stays up too late and wakes up too early too many days in a row. But as she continued to feel awful, we realized she instead must have some sort of bug.
And she wasn’t the only one. The volunteers and kids from VBS started falling like flies and by the end of the week, we were left with a skeleton volunteer crew and only about half of the kids we had started with (talk about crazy).
Thankfully, so far (knock on wood), Leander and I have avoided the bug, so we continued attending every night and wow did he have a blast. He had so much fun with his little friends (most of the kids his age at church are boys, so it was hilarious to watch them all interact with each other every night.
Every day we’d wake up and Leander would ask: “Is it time to go to VBS yet?”
Last night was the last night, but he still woke up this morning and asked if we were going back to VBS tonight.
Thankfully, Braelynn turned the corner yesterday afternoon and she’s been on the mend ever since. She finally started eating a little bit last night, and has been slowly eating more today.
What a week. - Before Braelynn got sick, I finally took the kids half-birthday (otherwise known as “summer”) portraits! I always intend to take those photos at the end of June or beginning of July – but the last few years, it’s been into the beginning of August before I get around to it. (Oops.)
Timing aside – these photos are some of my FAVORITE ever! Turns out – by the time kids reach 8 and 4 years old, they are capable of listening, following directions, and being happy through 20 minutes of picture-taking! It was so much fun (I’ll be blogging those images soon because I just love them so much!) - We have bees in our backyard – ground bees.
Derrick noticed them last week when he mowed the grass and he’s been on the mission to get rid of them. He’s tried every spray, powder, and poison we had – and has burned their nests (with gasoline) twice. These bees just will not die. He’s definitely making a dent into their nest and population, but they’re still burrowing on. Thankfully, he’s only gotten stung once (but that’s definitely enough.) - I got Abby this new dog food this week – it’s “specially formulated” for “senior” dogs. She loves it. She gobbles it straight down every time we put it in her bowl. Guess that’s a sign that she’s officially a “senior” now.
