What does 50 years of marriage look and feel like?
It’s being head-over-heels in love, it’s four kids, it’s a house that holds so many memories it may burst, it’s endless games of Scrabble around the kitchen table, it’s teasing siblings, it’s laughter, it’s happy times, it’s sad times, it’s unconditional love, it’s pets who are treated as grandchildren, and it’s not being able to move away from the home you raised your family in.
“We want to celebrate our family,” I was told when their daughter contacted me about taking photos to commemorate her parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. We decided that there was no better place to do that than at home – a home that almost went on the market last year, but was taken off because they simply couldn’t bear to part with it.
I asked them if they had a wedding photo. Their initial response was, “No,” and that’s when the kids began chiming in: “Yes you do!” “There’s one in the bedroom!” “I saw one downstairs last time I was here!” The house was searched and finally they found the one image of them on their wedding day – 50 years ago. It’s small and faded, but you can tell that the same love they had for each other then is still alive and well now.
